Life Expectancy, Schooling, and Lifetime Labor Supply: Theory and Evidence Revisited This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of the role of life expectancy for optimal schooling and lifetime labor supply. The results of a simple prototype Ben-Porath model with age-specific survival rates show that an increase in lifetime labor supply is not a necessary, nor a sufficient, condition for greater life expectancy to increase optimal schooling. The observed increase in survival rates during working ages that follows from the “rectangularization” of the survival function is crucial for schooling and labor supply. The empirical results suggest that the relative benefits of schooling have been increasing across cohorts of US men born 1840-1930. A simple quantitative analysis shows that a realistic shift in the survival function can lead to an increase in schooling and a reduction in lifetime labor hours. Life expectancy and income: The Ben-Porath mechanism revisited
In this paper we show that it may be optimal for individuals to educate themselves more and decrease future labor supply (choose earlier retirement) when life expectancy increases. This result reconciles the ndings of Hazan [Hazan, M., 2009. Longevity and Lifetime Labor Supply: Evidence and Implications. Econometrica 77, 18291863] with theory. Further, the paper contributes to a better unders...

We set up a three-period overlapping generation model in which young individuals allocate their time to schooling and work, healthy middle aged individuals allocate their time to leisure and work and their income to consumption and savings for retirement, and old age individuals live off their savings. The three period setup allows us to distinguish between longevity and active life expectancy ...

متن کاملA Theory of Growth and the Returns to Schooling with Rising Educational Attainment
This paper develops a theory to address and reconcile three stylized time trends: 1) constant growth, 2) rising levels of educational attainment (relative to length of career) and 3) fluctuating returns to education. The model utilizes production with heterogeneous human capital and heterogeneous occupations. This approach is combined with a growth engine that exhibits two forms of skill-biased...
متن کاملLifetime Labor Supply and Human Capital Investment
We develop a model of retirement and human capital investment to study the effects of tax and retirement policies. Workers choose the supply of raw labor (career length) and also the human capital embodied in their labor. Our model explains a significant fraction of the US-Europe difference in schooling and retirement. The model predicts that reforms of the European retirement policies modeled ...
